iOS Offboarding aims to help tackle the growing problem of e-waste by making recycling and reuse a more natural part of the iPhone usage lifecycle.

Our solution involved creating a simple and intuitive device offboarding process that guides users through the steps of recycling or reusing their old iPhones. We also included additional features that respond to specific problems iPhone users expressed when retiring old devices.

Problem

Old smartphones are susceptible to becoming e-waste as users stockpile them at home or improperly treat them after retirement.

We want users to extend the useful lifecycle of their smartphone devices to bolster the circular economy and move toward a sustainable supply chain.

Challenge

Solution

The goal of the final solution is to reimagine and redesign the iPhone set up experience on iOS in a way that encourages users to recycle or reuse their old iPhones.

• We constrained the project scope to iOS only due to Apple’s unique design language, their impact on the U.S. smart phone market, and their existing investment in sustainability.
